LEADIN: The grape harvest season is in full swing in Syria and Lebanon where wine makers continue to keep the industry going despite three years of war and the threat from Islamic extremists. Some work with the sound of bombs going off in the distance. All fear that their vineyard might be part of the next swathe of land seized by the Islamic State. STORYLINE: It's grape harvesting season and on the Kefraya wine estate in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon hundreds of Syrian families are picking the berries which will ferment into one of Lebanon's best kept secrets. Lebanese wineries like Kefraya are producing quality wines despite the odds: conflict, economic instability, and the looming threat of Islamic extremism. In Syria and Lebanon boutique wineries, mainly run by Christians, have endured despite decades of unrest and the fact that Islam, the majority faith in the region, forbids both the production and consumption of alcohol. The Lebanese wine industry is concentrated in the eastern Bekaa region, a sweeping plain framed by Syria's mountains that has long been a stronghold of the militant Shiite Hezbollah movement. More recently, the religiously mixed region has come to host hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. Most of the women here are Syrian refugees who fled from the eastern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State group's self-styled caliphate. There the punishment for drinking is 100 lashes. "Yes we have to work fast in order to get our daily wage. we have to harvest 6000 liras (4 USD) and usually we make up to 18000 (12USD)," says 18-year-old day labourer, Maha. Mohammed Sayyed is 23 years old. His job is to collect crates of grapes picked by the women, and bring them back to the truck. "We came here because of poverty. We were starving. They slaughtered people and destroyed everything. I'm from Raqqa," he says. The Lebanese wine industry has about 47 wineries which rely mostly on local markets and project to produce 8 million bottles of wine this year. Lebanon's sizable Christian community drinks, as do many liberal Muslims, but local sales have declined 10-20 percent this year as part of a larger economic downturn. "Regarding the Kefraya Estate, 60 percent of production is sold in the Lebanese territory and 40 percent outside. We are obviously affected (by the Syrian crisis). The Lebanese today are not up for going out and spending their evenings in restaurants with the current crisis," says Kefraya's technical director, Fabrice Guiberteau. Lebanon's wineries have thus far been spared from the conflict in neighboring Syria, but the war is never far off. Sometimes explosions from across the border echo like approaching thunder, and armed men conduct nightly patrols of the nearby village, fearing Islamic State militants might cross the border. Last month it spilled across the border when militants from Syria briefly overran the border town of Arsal, killing and abducting several police and soldiers. Two were later beheaded by the Islamic State group. But production continues. In his high-rise office in Beirut, Sandro Saade carefully chews a Merlot grape from his vineyard hundreds of miles away, trying to determine if it is ripe enough to order the start of the harvest. It's too dangerous for him to travel to the vineyards of Domaine de Bargylus on the Syrian plains of Latakia. As well-off businessmen, the Saade family are at risk of being kidnapped on the increasingly perilous roads crossing the Syrian-Lebanese border. The grapes are shuttled back and forth by taxi drivers, who are occasionally forced to turn back when security forces close the crossings. German tourist, Anna Legde is one of few that dare visit. From: Russia Today Al Jazeera exodus: Channel losing staff over 'bias' Published: 12 March, 2012, 11:52 Qatari TV Channel Al Jazeera is gripped with loud resignations. Key employees in its Beirut office have reportedly resigned over the "biased" stance the television sticks to. Al Jazeera has recently lost several of its key employees in the Beirut office: Managing Director Hassan Shaaban resigned his post, Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar reported on Sunday. This follows a series of resignations by the television's staff in the office, including correspondent Ali Hashem and producer Mousa Ahmad. While little is known about the resignation of Hassan Shaaban, other than he quit over the biased policy of the channel in covering the Arab Spring -- especially events in Syria and Bahrain -- there is more information concerning correspondent Ali Hashem. The latter resigned his post last Tuesday and emails leaked by the Syrian hackers showed his frustration over the channel's policies in covering the events in Syria, Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar quoted a source in the station as saying. "You can check the emails he sent to his colleague, Rula Ibrahim, to know his position which changed after the station refused to show photos he had taken of armed fighters clashing with the Syrian Army in Wadi Khaled. Instead [Al Jazeera] lambasted him as a shabeeh [implying a regime loyalist]," the source said. http://rt.com/news/al-jazeera-loses-staff-335/ .......................................................................... Al-Jazeera correspondent in Beirut resigns over biased coverage of Syrian file BEIRUT-- Upset with its provocation and bias, Aljazeera correspondent in Beirut Ali Hashem has resigned his position from the Qatari channel, according to the Lebanese Newspaper of al-Akhbar. The Newspaper said that Mr. Hashem resigned his work as a correspondent for Aljazeera in Beirut against a backdrop of its coverage of the Syrian file, that is based on fabrications and falsity. " Hashem's reservations on Aljazeera are clear and known ...they are no longer a secret, you can go back to the e-mails he sent to his colleague Rola Ibrahim to know about his stance since Ali sent the photos of militants and their clashes with the Syrian army in Wadi Khaled in Lebanon, as the channel abstained from airing them," al-Akhbar quoted an informed source in al-Jazeera as saying. The Syrian e-Army leaked correspondence between Hashem and Ibrahim, a news reader in the Qatari channel, via e-mail where the latter said that she "recanted the revolution" describing it as a branch of Qaeda and it would destroy the country. http://www.champress.net/index.php?q=en/Article/view/114995 ................................................................................... The resignation of Ghassan bin Jeddo, former director of Aljazeera office in Beirut, came as a landmark after the Qatari channel "has changed into an operation room for provocation and mobilization" against Syria and other Arab countries, saying that he is not ready to be "a false witness". Following bin Jeddo's resignation, presenter and journalist Sami Kleib, known for his professionalism and affiliation to the resistance issue in the world, officially suspended his cooperation with Aljazeera last July after several months' absence. For her part, the resigned Lina Zahr-Eddin, criticized the channel's coverage of the events in Syria, Bahrain, Libya and Yemen, wondering at how a channel the size of Aljazeera could not certify the identity of eyewitness before giving them voice or the accurateness of a photo before screening it. Zahr-Eddin, who resigned two years ago along with three of her colleagues, said that "the outer image of Aljazeera is different from its reality", stressing that she would have followed in bin Jeddo's footsteps had she still been working for Aljazeera till now because the channel's new policy does not suit its convictions.
